Abstract. ABSTRACT

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is an annual herb that belongs to the family Apiaceae. The rate of deterioration on seed quality parameters in coriander is rapid during storage resulting poor vigour and establishment of crops. For this reason, the minimum germination percent has been fixed at 60 per cent for this crop. Since availability of quality seed of coriander is very low, seed priming is an excellent technique which improves germination and better crop stand. Thus, seeds produced by those crops will produce better quality seeds. Hence the present study was carried out with the objective to study the standardization of priming period in coriander. The experiment was conducted on DW-3 variety of coriander in CRD under laboratory conditions with 21 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments consisted of different duration (4 hr, 8 hr, 12 hr, 16 hr and 20 hr) of priming with hydropriming, vermiwash (5%), nano-urea (5%), GA3 50 ppm and a control. Irrespective of the media, concentration or duration, the coriander seed priming with GA3 (50 ppm) followed by 12 hours soaking duration recorded significantly higher germination percentage (80.33), shoot length (17.47 cm), root length (15.30 cm), seedling length (32.77 cm) and seedling vigour index (26.32) followed by 16 hours soaking duration as compared to control. Priming with GA3 has extensive accumulation of nucleic acid in coriender seeds resulting in accelerated germination. The findings of this study demonstrate that both priming duration and seed treatment have a substantial impact on seed yield and quality of coriander. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing priming duration and utilizing seed treatment techniques to enhance coriander seed production and quality. Furthermore, the study also assessed yield attributes, including seed yield per plant, seed yield per plot and seed yield per hectare, remarkably seeds subjected to 12 hr GA3 priming (T8) exhibited significantly higher yields, producing 3.72 grams per plant, 1.89 kg per plot and 12.25 q/ha respectively.
