| Abstract. | ABSTARCT

The study on “Parenting styles and socio-emotional behaviour among preschool children of post-covid pandemic: correlates and intervention” was conducted during 2020-2023 from rural and urban areas of Dharwad and Bagalkot Districts, Karnataka. The objectives were to assess the parenting styles and socio-emotional behaviour of preschool children 3-6 years of post-covid pandemic, to study the influence child, parental and familial factors on parenting styles and socio-emotional behaviour of preschool children, to know the interrelationship between parenting styles and socio-emotional behaviour of preschool children and to develop an intervention module on positive parenting and test its efficacy. The sample comprised of 200 mothers and their children aged between 3 to 6 years (100 from rural and 100 from urban areas) from Dharwad and Bagalkot. The tools such as parenting practises scale by Robinson (2005), strength and difficult questionnaire by Goodman et al. (2005), parents stress scale by Berry and Jones (1995), child-parent relationship scale by Pianta (1992), parent sense of competency scale by Wallston and Wanderman (1978), home environment inventory developed by Caldwell & Bradley (2003) and socio–economic status scale by Aggarwal et al. (2005) were used. The study results indicated significant association between parenting styles among rural and urban preschool children. Most of the rural and urban mothers practised authoritative or authoritarian styles. Significant associations and difference were observed in the socio-emotional behaviours of rural and urban preschool children. Most of the children exhibited slightly raised emotional problems, hyperactivity, peer issues, and pro-social behaviour issues. Parents of children aged between 3-4 years and 4-5 years in rural and urban areas had practised authoritative or authoritarian styles respectively. With preference to boy’s parents were preferred authoritarian style compared to girls. In both contexts, first-born children's parents tended towards authoritative styles, while same parents of sister and brother siblings' group leaned towards authoritarian approaches. The findings also revealed that, young rural mothers aged between 21-30 years preferred authoritative parenting, whereas urban mothers and fathers preferred authoritarian approaches. Moreover, a higher percentage of parents with less than a college education tended to adopt authoritarian or authoritative styles. Among rural children, those with stressed mothers, strained parent-child relationships, lower parenting competence, and average home environments were more likely to exhibit slightly raised socio-emotional behavioural issues compared to their urban counterparts. Factors like gender, parenting stress and socio-economic status were found as main predictors for authoritative parenting style of rural and urban parents. The results also showed a significant difference in parenting styles between the pre- and post-intervention tests, with increase in authoritative parenting style. A significant difference was observed for dimensions such as emotional problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, pro-social behaviour and total scores in post-test. After intervention an improvement was seen in parenting stress, parent-child relationships, parenting competence and home environments. Children's socio-emotional behaviour highlight the need for educating parents about effects of positive parenting on holistic development of children.
|
