Abstract. ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted during late kharif 2023-24 at Saidapur Farm, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad to study the response of fodder maize genotypes to graded levels of nitrogen in Northern Transitional Zone of Karnataka on shallow black soil. The experiment was laid out in split plot design and replicated thrice. The treatments consisted of four N levels viz., N1:100% RDN (150 kg N ha-1), N2: 125% RDN (187.5 kg N ha-1), N3: 150% RDN (225 kg N ha-1) and N4:40% RDN (Basal) + Remaining based on SPAD meter critical value < 50 as main plots and three genotypes viz., G1: African Tall, G2: J-1006 and G3: J-1007 as sub plots. The results of the experiment revealed that among the varied N levels, application of 225 kg N ha-1 recorded significantly higher green fodder yield (46.90 t ha-1), dry fodder yield (13.86 t ha-1), nitrogen uptake (216.86 kg ha-1), crude protein content (9.77%), total ash content (9.00), net returns (`72188 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.60) over other treatments. Among the genotypes, J-1007 recorded significantly higher green fodder yield (43.62 t ha-1), dry fodder yield (12.48 t ha-1), nitrogen uptake (191.92 kg ha-1), crude protein content (9.58%), total ash content (8.84), net returns (`64984 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.47) over other genotypes. Among the interactions, genotype J-1007 with 150 per cent RDN (225 kg N ha-1) recorded significantly higher green fodder yield (49.70 t ha-1), dry fodder yield (15.6 t ha-1), nitrogen uptake (247 kg ha-1) crude protein content (9.90 %), total ash content (9.12), net returns (`79188 ha-1) and B: C ratio (2.76) as compared to other treatments.
