520 _aABSTRACT Sorghum rust (Puccinia purpurea Cooke.) was found to occur in low to severe form in northern parts of Karnataka and with the per cent disease index (PDI) ranging from 29.67 to 91.11 and 20.35 to 86.67 during rabi 2021-22 and 2022-23, respectively. MARS, Dharwad of Dharwad taluk recorded highest disease severity (91.11 PDI) and lowest disease severity was observed in Kannolli (29.67 PDI) village of Sindagi taluk during rabi 2021-22 and Narendra village of Dharwad taluk recorded highest severity (86.67 PDI) and lowest disease severity was observed in Moratgi village (20.35 PDI) of Sindagi taluk. Highest per cent losses in grain yield due to rust was recorded in M 35-1 (38.00 %) and lowest in CSV 29R (18.33 %). E 4, SVD 1423, SVD 1327, CSV 20 and CB 33 were identified as slow rusters with smaller pustule size (0.084 - 0.122 mm2), lesser number of pustules/ cm2 (0.33 - 1.26), least rust severity (3.90 - 15.28 %), AUDPC (45.85 - 199.03) and rate of development of rust (0.03 - 0.07 “r” value/unit/day). The rainfall and relative humidity had a significant negative correlation with rust severity during rabi 2021-22, while maximum temperature had a significant positive correlation with rust severity during rabi 2022-23. All twenty five isolates obtained during survey produced four different uredospore colours (cinnamon, reddish brown, dark brown and yellowish brown), three shapes (ellipsodial to ovoid, globose and ovoid to obovoid) with some variation in size (18.00 – 26.00 × 13.00 – 18.00 µm) and two different teliospore colours (light brown to dark brown and reddish brown), two shapes (Ellipsodial and oblong) with some variation in size (23.00 – 33.00 × 13.00 – 18.00 µm. The ISSR profiling for all the twenty five isolates yielded polymorphic banding pattern and UPGMA cluster analysis grouped the isolates into three major clusters viz., cluster –I (18 isolates), cluster –II (5 isolates) and cluster – III (2 isolates). In vitro studies revealed that, among the different fungicides, botanicals, ITKs and bioagents tested, tebuconazole 50 % + trifloxystrobin 25 % (100 %) and hexaconazole 5 % EC (100 %), Turmeric extract 25%, neem extract 50 %(78.53 %), panchagavya (52.07 %) and combination of T. harzianum (3.3 g/l), P. fluorescens (3.3 g/l) and B. subtilis (3.3 g/l) ( 84.59 %) recorded maximum mean per cent inhibition of uredospore germination irrespective of concentration tested. Field experiment was conducted at MARS, Dharwad and at ARS, Hanumanamatti during rabi 2022-23. Among 11 integrated spray schedules evaluated, tebuconazole 50 % + trifloxystrobin 25 % at 0.05 % was significantly superior spray schedule which recorded least PDI (13.39) with highest grain yield (16.04 q/ha) with the maximum B: C ratio of 1.85 followed by hexaconazole 5% EC at 0.1 % (15.64 PDI) (15.26 q/ha) and highest PDI (81.83), lowest grain yield (9.67 q/ha) and B:C ratio (1.16) was recorded in unsprayed control. Out of 305 sorghum genotypes screened, only E-4 genotype shown resistant reaction to rust under field condition.
