520 _aABSTRACT Land use land cover (LULC), crop inventory for acreage estimation and yield assessment of pigeonpea in Vijayapura taluk was carried out by selecting 10 ground truth sites (GTS) for each land use class, major crops and 25 for pigeonpea yield estimation using Sentinel-2 satellite images accessed different dates from May to December, 2023. The LULC and crop acreage estimation were done by running the supervised classification with maximum likelihood algorithm using QGIS software. The yield estimation was done by developing regression models using the relationship between crop cut yield, normalized difference vegetation index and leaf area index of pigeonpea from selected ground truth sites. The comparative LULC analysis showed bare land as dominant (67.65%), vegetation (25.05%), built-ups (6.67%), and water bodies constituting 0.63 per cent in summer 2023 in the study area. While in rabi 2023, vegetation occupied higher area (69.65%), bare land reduced to 22.16 per cent, built ups showing slightly increased area (7.52%), with negligible increase in area under waterbodies (0.66%), signifying the importance of rainfall for agriculture in the study area. Crop inventory and acreage estimates of major crops was found to be 35173, 1957, 3802, 8333, 5472 and 9293 ha under pigeonpea, grapes, sugarcane, sorghum, chickpea and wheat, respectively, showing relative deviation of 5.06, -23.45, 23.98, 13.41, -6.10 and 56.81 per cent, respectively comparing the Karnataka State Department of Agriculture (KSDA) data. The yield estimated by running regression model from the NDVI values of selected sites by digitization and extraction of values from the software during the peak vegetative stage of pigeonpea and LAI was 843 kg ha-1 showing relative deviation of -0.24 and -16.96 per cent, with crop cut and KSDA yield of the study area.
