520 _aABSTRACT Seed quality is crucial for boosting seed production and productivity. However, soybean seeds are inherently short lived, quickly loses viability even under optimal storage conditions. Therefore, maintaining their quality during storage is of prime importance. Keeping these in view, a laboratory experiment was conducted to study the effect of modified atmospheric storage and packaging materials on seed longevity of soybean in the Department of Seed Science and Technology, College of Agriculture, Dharwad during 2023-24.Among modified atmospheric storage conditions with different concentration of gases, the seeds stored in 90 % CO2: 4 % O2 : 6 % N2 recorded maximum seed germination (86.77 %), speed of germination (30.28), shoot length (14.49 cm), root length (12.58 cm), seedling dry weight (0.995 g/10 seedlings), vigour index (2349), field emergence (81.27 %), dehydrogenase activity (0.438 OD value), α- amylase activity (10.72 µmol of maltose released min-1 ml-1 enzyme) and catalase activity (1.364 µmol H2O2 decomposed min-1 g-1 of protein) with lower electrical conductivity (0.301 dSm-1), moisture content (8.01 %), lipase activity (0.196 meq min-1 g-1 of sample) and zero seed infection at the end of nine months storage. The seeds stored in super grain bag recorded significantly higher seed germination (76.62 %), speed of germination (25.15), shoot length (12.65 cm), root length (11.33 cm), seedling dry weight (0.845 g/10 seedlings), vigour index (1837), field emergence (72.42 %), dehydrogenase activity (0.362 OD value), α- amylase activity (9.51 µmol of maltose released min-1 ml-1 enzyme) and catalase activity (1.262 µmol H2O2 decomposed min-1 g-1 of protein) with lower electrical conductivity (0.371 dSm-1), moisture content (8.10 %), lipase activity (0.238 meq min-1 g-1 of sample) and seed infection (4.0 %) at the end of nine months storage.
